Benriach ‘Maltings Season’ celebrates the floor maltings which lie at the heart of Benriach distillery, in production for over 120 years and the historical lifeblood of the distillery, built by founder John Duff when the distillery was founded.
Every year during ‘Maltings Season’ BenRiach’s dedicated team of craftsmen malt barley onsite the old way using this historic floor maltings. The malt produced during ‘Maltings Season’ results in a wholesome and creamy single malt of exceptional richness of character, a tribute to the founder and the slow craft of his historic maltings, which the team of skilled craftsmen continue to this day, in the pursuit of exceptional flavour.
The average age of Malting Season Third Edition is 10 years old (combining 9.5 and 10.5 year old stocks malted and distilled in the Autumn of 2012 and 2013). Malting Season First and Second Edition were both just over 8 years old at the time of bottling.
As a result of the additional maturation, Malting Season Third Edition has developed the top note complexity of fruity bergamot, clementine, honeyed apricot and wild cherry rising from the floor malted base of nutty kilned malt, barley sugar and almond cream.
Both malting seasons in 2012 and 2013 began with the hand malting of concerto barley in BenRiach’s traditional floor maltings and finished with slow maturation in bourbon and virgin oak casks in the earthen floored dunnage warehouses.
